Dear Miss Manners...

I'm very disturbed at what seems to be a growing trend. I work in a rather large office, 400-500 people in my building. More and more while I'm in the ladies room, I hear other ladies talking on their cell phones while they're in the stall doing their business!! Personally, I find this quite distasteful, not to mention rude to the person you're speaking to. I'd be mortally offended if I were speaking to someone and suddenly heard through the phone the WHOOSH of a flushing toilet!

I know, however, that this is the 21st Century, and understand how important the electronics are to us, but please tell me, Miss Manners, is this behavior appropriate??

Eagerly awaiting your reply...

If you knew how many people I take to the bathroom with me when I am at home... but... i don't flush on the phone... hehehe

Never talk on the phone while in a public restaurant... kinda tacky but more for others in the other stalls.

Not a problem at school... the bathroom doesn't have a signal.

Dear Disturbed,

You are absolutely correct in that listening to other people's conversation while in a restroom are most awkward.

However, as you pointed out, this is the 21st century. Many people maintain a belief that if they do not remain connected to the outside world at all times, they will simply disappear into a void somewhere.

I am afraid this is something that those of us with manners will have to become accustomed to. We do not have to join them, though. I encourage you to refrain from the impulse to loudly immitate gross bodily functions in the next stall, no matter how much fun you think it would be.

Best regards,

Miss Manners

I actually worked with a lawyer who not ONLY made calls from the bathroom, he would also e-mail, type corporate memos, and schedule flights via the internet.

I worked in a very strange company.
